West Front - Gabr Saleh by Bill Peters

Bob Glenn and I played out the 18 turn scenario called Gabr Saleh from West Front.

Bob played the Axis side while I played the British.

Bob's goal was to take the objectives and exit troops. Mine was to deny him the boardedge mainly and try and inflict some losses on him.

My force was composed mainly with Stuart tanks. Great for hit and run. I had some infantry and artillery to back up my position as well as the popgun 2pdr AT guns. Great for taking out trucks and Italian armor. Worthless against PzIIIs.

The battle opened (first few turns) with Bob moving up to the first objective. While I took out a few ACs he in turn flamed a few Stuarts.

His move was going well until I hit him on the flank with a ton of Stuarts. We both lost armor on that one. I relearned that German infantry are incredibly tough even in the desert. In the end Bob flamed alot of Stuarts. Round 1 went to Bob.

His next move was to make a dash for the boardedge. Now comes the funny part. I didnt know I had a ton of Crusader tanks coming on. Now that is what you call REAL fog of war (brain mainly but the realism of not knowing you have forces coming up really was kind of interesting).

Bob exited a ton of trucks and then my Crusaders made their appearance. I flamed several ACs and other vehicles.

Now what to do with tons of 2 pdr guns.

One concept I had was to hit him on the flank. I had a ton of vehicles so why not. So I tried that out and a 2pdr doesnt even seem to penetrate PZ III armor from the rear OR flank.

Ok - next thing was to wipe out infantry and take the objectives.

Bob laid back to see what I would do. With still a potent force of Stuarts and Crusaders I bit at his flanks a bit wasting some of his SPGs and infantry. I ended up taking back the two objectives but Bob retook them by games end. Outcome was Major Axis Victory. Well over the mark.

I am interested in replaying this one to see if I could do better with the British armor. While I dont think its a balanced scenario I cant rate it til I have played it as both sides and have put it thru its paces.

Anyone interested please contact me. I do 3-4 files a day if you like or can go as slow as 3 files a week if you are busy (but I dont want to hold this one up for long or interest lags).

Good game Bob. You made alot of British tea in that one!
